For foreign students who wish to pursue non-academic studies, vocational studies or enroll in a technical school within the United States may be eligible for an M-1 visa. Students who acquire an M-1 visa may reside within the United States for the duration of their studies but cannot seek employment while holding the visa.
M-1 Visa Requirements
In order to obtain an M-1 visa, applicants must be enrolled full time (at least 12 course hours per semester) at an approved junior or community college and have a specified focus of study. Applicants wishing to pursue an associate’s degree or applicants who have smaller course loads (less than 12-course hours) may also qualify. Prospective applicants who wish to enter the United States to enroll in vocational or non-academic programs are required to attend classes for at least 18 hours on a weekly basis.
In addition to the previous enrollment and attendance requirements, applicants must also provide the following evidence and documentation:
- Evidence of medical insurance
- Evidence of sufficient financial funding (bank statements, etc)
- Evidence of program eligibility
- Completed Form I-20
- Proof of the applicant’s intention of returning to their country post graduation
Application Process
Upon meeting the requirements stated above and the completion of Form I-20, prospective applicants may begin the application process. In order to apply for an M-1 visa, applicants must provide the following:
- Non-refundable application fee
- Completed and submission of Form DS-160
- Completed and submission of Form DS-157 (for males between the ages of 16 to 45)
- Valid passport which is valid for 6 months or more past the anticipated applicant’s graduation date
