An A-3 visa is designed for employees of diplomats or foreign government officials who are holders of either an A-1 Visa or A-2 Visa.
Who Is Eligible For An A-3 Visa?
Employees and attendants of foreign government officials who hold a valid A-1 Visa or A-2 Visa, are eligible to apply for an A-3 Visa. Prospective applicants who are eligible for an A3 Visa must meet the requirements set forth under 9 FAM 402.3-5(C). They must also be able to demonstrate their ability to perform similar duties to holders of A-1 Visas or A-2 Visas.
Applying For An A-3 Visa
There are a variety of steps within the A-3 Visa application process and may vary based on the location of the U.S. Embassy where the applicant resides. Those who are seeking to apply for an A3 Visa must go through an interview with their local U.S. Embassy or consulate.
The Application Process
A-3 Visa applicants should expect the following application process:
- Interview at the applicants local U.S. Embassy or consulate
- Complete the A-3 Visa application online
- Provide the following documentation
- Valid passport
- Visa application confirmation page (from Form DS-160)
- Photograph
- Note from diplomat from applicants home country, confirming employment status
Employment Contract Requirements
In order to obtain an A3 Visa, applicants are required to obtain an employment contract. This contract must be signed by the applicant’s employer and written in English. For applicants who do not speak English, a copy of the employment contract must be written in their native language. Valid employment contracts must include the following:
- Hourly wage / salary
- Full description of job duties and responsibilities
- Proof of transportation to and from the United States
- Average hours worked per week
- Payment options
- Terms of employment
